Shore Protection, Yau Ma Tei (Hong Kong)
|
The reclamation works near Yau Ma Tei in Hong Kong were part of the civil works related to the construction of the new airport at Chep Lap Kok. our involvement with this project was the construction of sloping seawalls to protect the reclaimed land from erosion. The sea wall has a total length of 1,229 metres and consists of building debris and 700,000 tonnes of rock in four different gradings of rock:
The seawall was constructed between March and November 1993 using three different kinds of marine plant: Split hopper barges, derrick barges (below) and a Side Stone Dumping Vessel. The photo on the left shows the Side Stone Dumping Vessel Lauwerszee (692 tonnes capacity), ready to place a load of armour underlayer. Several tugs, 'sampans' and motor launches were used as support vessels. I worked on this project as a trainee site engineer, as part of the Boskalis trainee program. |
